Our Mission

The mission of Alaska Backcountry Fishing Lodge is to provide premier fly-out fishing, guided and unguided raft trips, guided and unguided lake fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, beach combing, and remote Alaska lodging.  Our vision is to develop strong, long lasting relationships with clients and fishermen that grow over time.

We explore some of the most productive and beautiful waters in the Bristol Bay region in search of the FIVE species of Pacific Salmon (King/Chinook, Red/Sockeye, Chum, Pink, and Silver/Coho Salmon) Trophy Rainbow Trout, Northern Pike, Arctic Grayling, Arctic Char, and Lake Trout.

We pursue these beautiful fish in arguably the most perfect location: right from our backdoor using our float planes, rafts, jet boats, lake boats, and hiking.  With an operational range in excess of 180 miles from the lodge we can access any fishing opportunity you desire.  You are guaranteed to have our plane stay with you on your fly-out trips, giving you the ability to change locations, immediately transport back to the lodge if bad weather arises, and to ensure your safety.  We are looking forward to sharing our world class services and incredible trophy fishing, all surrounded by pristine wilderness that takes you past volcanos, rivers and ample wildlife.  We call our location perfect for many reasons, but let us show you why.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve was recently reviewed as one of CNN's world dream destinations.  An added bonus to being inside the National Park, and where Lake Clark bases its Field Headquarters, is our access to developed hiking trails, beautiful water falls, and a friendly community.

The owners

Ryan and Heather Twitchell,

This lodge was originally a childhood dream of Ryan's who, as a young boy, sat where the lodge is currently built.  His childhood here in Port Alsworth was filled with watching DeHavilland Beavers and Cessna 206s take off at first light every morning as fishermen went out in search of Alaskan trophy rainbow trout and fresh wild Salmon.  Ryan has since been planning our layout and operation for over 20 years.

Ryan worked to develop the skills he would need to build and operate our lodge as a journeyman carpenter, float plane pilot, avid rafter and kayaking instructor.  Inbetween acquiring these skills, Ryan enlisted in the US Army as a flight instructor, serving for 8 years as a UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter crew chief and maintainer.  Ryan is now living his lifelong dream of building this lodge.  It only takes one flight or day out on an adventure to recognize his passion of sharing Alaska with people.  His knowledge, combined with our family's long history of Alaskan life and adventure, is unmatched.

Heather, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, grew up all over as a military child, but fell in love with Alaska when she was stationed here flying helicopters for the Army.  Together they run the lodge. Heather oversees the day to day management responsibilities while Ryan handles the flying and guiding of clients.
